The Brix scale is calibrated to the number of grams of cane sugar (sucrose) contained in 100ml of water. In addition to sugar levels, the Brix scale is widely used to show the concentration percentage of soluble solids of a water solution. The soluble solids content is the total of all the solids dissolved in the water, beginning with sugar, salts, protein, acids, etc. The Brix reading is the value of the sum total of the dissolved solids. For example, the weight percent concentration of an aqueous solution of ferric chloride can be directly determined using a Brix hydrometer.
