The SM-5 fulfills its hotplate duty-requirements, and while having a more third world appearance, its origin IS China. Its function is to provide low-cost hot plate service where the heaviest use is not required.
There is a vertical metal rod optionally fitted on the back side of the heater. A test tube or thermometer may be attached to the rod (with user-supplied clamp) for immersion into a beaker placed on the burner's surface. Use the provided ceramic top plate when heating a round bottom flask.
